Week 5 Term 2
Nightcliff Primary School
Hello Families
The Mother’s Day Breakfast, raffle, and stall was a wonderful celebration of all the people who represent motherhood. Families walked to school together, met and greeted Hector the Road Safety Cat, enjoying coffee and breakfast. Nightcliff Primary School would like to thank the School Council for their organisation of the event, staff and the local businesses who donated food or prizes. Families who attended the Early Years assembly afterwards also enjoyed T Wilkinson and T Vlamos’ Mother’s Day performance.
This year the school continues to have a focus on Reading improvement. Teachers are planning English lessons that are focused on a rich text to explicitly teach reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills. The Book Fair was held this week, students across the school were able to attend, select and purchase books for enjoyment. The National Simultaneous Storytime 2024 will take place on Wednesday 22 May at 12pm AEST. This year's selected picture book is Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. Bowerbird Blues is a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird's search for blue things sends him soaring across the sea, sky, and city. We are excited to have early childhood classes participate in the annual event. Parents are encouraged to attend our ‘Parent Reading Info Night’ on the 28th of May from 5:00pm until 5:30pm to learn more about ways to support your child’s reading at home.
Upcoming activities at the school also include School Photo Day in Week 6. Then in Week 7 it is Reconciliation Week and a Friday whole school assembly where students can wear casual dress in the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. Our NPS Sports day is in Week 8. Towards the end of term we are excited for the Art Show and Years 5 and 6 Camps. More information on these events will be included on future Newsletter and Xuno communications.
We ask all families to work with staff at the school to access Xuno, feedback from families is that the first log in can be a problem but the platform is effective for day to day communication. This will be important as we move to paperless reports for students and families this term.
Have a wonderful weekend enjoying the best of Darwin’s Dry Season calendar and events.
AFL Gala Day
On Wednesday this week, Year 5 and 6 students travelled to Marrara and played in numerous AFL matches against several different schools from around Darwin. We entered two mixed teams who played fantastically together. Everyone put in their best effort and demonstrated excellent teamwork and sportsmanship.
All the teams played well, with our Team 1 coming first in their pool, and Team 2 coming in third. Well, done to all involved, it was a fun day out!
Flora Presentation to Eco Warriors in Week 3, Term 2, 2024 Land Care NT
Dr Donna Lewis and Gypsy from Land Care NT, and Emma from the Darwin City Council visited the Eco Warriors to deliver a fascinating and fun educational session about native flora. The program is a part of the Flora, Fauna and Biodiversity Science Education Program. The program is cooperated program hosted by Darwin City Council, Inspired NT, Land Care NT, Territory Native Plants and Darwin Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Interactive Flora learning session ran for 1 hour and included a very informative presentation, hands on learning with collecting leaves, weeds, herbs and flowers from our school grounds. The presentation allowed students to look at flora under stereo microscopes to identify and classify the different flora. All students learned plenty about their environment, terminology to identify plants and skills to classify the unique plant species.
In the coming weeks Eco Warriors will participate in the Native Fauna session.
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions by contacting Land Care NT at info@landcare.org.au.

Exploring Artistry: Year 5/6 Students Find Inspiration in Teho Ropeyarn
This week as we delve into another term of creativity within the Visual Arts learning area, the Year 5/6 students have drawn on inspiration from the works of the talented artist Teho Ropeyarn. Our budding artists have embarked on a transformative exploration of culture, identity, and imagination. Teho Ropeyarn, renowned for his evocative and culturally resonant artworks, has become an inspiration for our own art.
One of the most striking aspects of Ropeyarn's work is his ability to blend traditional Indigenous art forms with contemporary elements, creating pieces that are both visually captivating and culturally significant. Our students have eagerly followed in his footsteps, drawing upon their own cultural backgrounds and experiences to inform their artistic interpretations.
In addition to honing their technical skills, the students have also been encouraged to explore the deeper meaning behind their artwork, reflecting on the stories they wish to tell and the messages they hope to convey.
As we marvel at the creativity and talent on display in the Art room, I would like to invite any interested students to consider entering one of the art categories at the Seabreeze Festival - Nightcliff Community Bank Jetty ArtSpace Awards 2024.
You can enter the art competition FOR FREE with an individually realised artwork, and potentially win the $100 voucher prize offered from one of our supportive local sponsors.
Visit www.jettyartspace.com for important information on the ‘2024 Jetty ArtSpace Competition'.
Read through the above website before proceeding, and please remember that the actual art entry needs to be registered here to be eligible for the competition, deadline May the 3rd.
Stay tuned for more artistic events,
Ms Wendy
