Week 2 Term 2
Nightcliff Primary School
Dear Parents/Carers
The early years swimming groups have been very excited to undertake lessons with the RLSSA Swim and Survive program at the Nightcliff pool. Amongst forgotten bathers and tired faces at the end of the week, many students have been able to tell us how much they have learned and that they are able to be safe in the pools and ocean.
We had an amazing Anzac Assembly on Friday 22nd April and this was well received by students and teachers, in particular having representation from the Navy Catifalque party, Squadron leader, Mr Craig Sedgman, and Reverend Joshua Kuswadi from St Peter’s church. The stories represented were solemn and educational for all students including our Preschool who attended.
I would like to acknowledge that our school community was featured on the front page of the NT News Saturday 23rd April.
Please find below the facts and process we have gone through to clarify any misunderstandings this article may have caused.
- The school has been encountering several young and vulnerable students absconding from the school grounds and onto roads neighbouring the property through gaps in surrounding fencing that exist currently. Of particular concern is Pandanus Street through the staff carpark, leading onto the oval and gaps in exterior fencing to the roads, and through the front of school gates.
- We have placed notices on all gates to remind visitors, staff and students that gates need to be closed behind them to provide a safe and inclusive environment for these students of Nightcliff Primary school.
Under safety and inclusion requirements and in consultation with the Department of Education Quality Safety and Standards, a temporary fence has been constructed to provide a safe and inclusive environment for these children and prevent further risks to safety.
Going forward, the fencing needs of the school will be open to consultation by the wider community. Please note: This will not impact the oval, playground, basketball courts and wildlife sanctuary forest and community access to this valued space.
Thank you for your feedback so far on this matter. There is an opportunity for further feedback, discussion and information at the next school council meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 5, 5:30 pm-7:30 pm, where a community consultation process will be formulated. We continue to welcome feedback through email at the school on nightcliff.ps@education.nt.gov.au for which I will forward to the school council for their information.
