Week 1 Term 4
Nightcliff Primary School Newsletter
Hi everyone
Welcome back to Term 4.
We had an exciting welcome back assembly this morning and reminders about respectful behaviour towards each other, adults, our grounds and sports equipment.
Student voice
This term the NT Learning Commissioners and SRC continue to seek feedback and gather ideas for improvements in the school to engage students, through SRC meetings in Week 5 and 10 and student voice boxes that will be placed in each classroom. The NTLC will begin student broadcasts on video each week to remind students about the times table challenge this term and the Lego reading competition. Other initiatives the NTLC has this term are to support buddy reading after lunch in early years classes and support wellbeing in the yard by being Peer mediators who are visible in pink vests. The NTLC has examined pre-data on wellbeing collected last term from classes and it is hoped that the increase in peer mediators in the playground will help to reduce the number of mean moments and bullying incidents recorded. Post data will be collected in Week 5 to measure the success of the NTLC initiative. Please encourage your child to report issues or problems in the playground to these senior students who are able to help younger students solve friendship problems.

Safety
As the weather gets hotter please encourage students to drink plenty of water and apply sunscreen before school. We will be opening the library every lunchtime and at recess for 3 days this term to allow students to play in cooler areas.
Plover breeding season has stared and we have some plovers and chicks nesting on the grounds in front of the library and on the Oval. Please be mindful and try to avoid these nesting areas and do not antagonise the birds.
The new fence is up at the front of the school. Please note opening times from 7:45-8:30 and 2:15pm-3:00pm. Duty of care of students in the playground does not start until 7:45am as teachers are not required at work until after this time. Our front office staff start at 7:30am but do not have a legal duty of care over students. A number of children are being dropped off before this time. As it will start raining shortly please ensure students have a raincoat or umbrella. The basketball court next to the Darwin City Council public laneway has an all-weather cover over it.
Thank you for your patience during this week whilst we establish routines with the new gate system with students and families.
Learning at NPS
Mathematics observations will be occurring in classes this term to support teachers to share best practice and inform resources that may be needed to be supplemented to support Mathematics programs going forward. Our PR1ME maths program is set at a high level to enrich and extend students. We further supplement this learning through Mathletics. The licences are free and students can work on their personal learning goals (areas of need for revision) through the topic search function. These topics are 10 questions long and are differentiated for success so that students are encouraged to continue. This means if they get a questions wrong an easier question is given to encourage them to continue to try. There is also a help function with a cartoon character with audio functions for explanations of a range of methods demonstrated to enable students with different learning needs to understand how to work out the maths question. Please continue to work on timetables recall up to 12 and beyond if needed. Addition strategies also support multiplication. Try it here: www.mathletics.com.au
We encourage students in Term 4 to keep practicing in particular our ASIP goals of reading, mathematics and wellbeing particularly encouraging students to become resilient learners.
Have a great start to the term.
Colour Fun Run
This weeks winners of the colour run sign-up were 3 Bouveng. 6 students from across the school were also selected to colour bomb Ms Ruan and Ms Mackie at lunchtime today. Sign up details are included in the newsletter. As little as $10 will enable students to be eligible for prizes. Thank you for your continued support of this major fundraiser which is going towards increasing library resources to support our major focus of Reading. Many students have requested favourite authors and series which we would like to purchase to continue their love of reading. Reading results are continuing to improve, so thank you for support of this area this year.
Transition
Students in Transition Elliott have been working very hard to improve their writing skills. This week students engaged in a writing activity where they shared their memorable experiences from the school holidays.

Solar Car
Winning solar car team returns to Nightcliff Primary School. The Brunel Solar Car Team have a memorandum of understanding with Nightcliff Primary School as a partnership that promotes the improvement in student outcomes for sustainability and environmental science. The Brunel solar car team from the Netherlands have a 40 strong team and have been coming to the school since 2014 on bi-annual visits. They run classroom presentations on solar power and the students see the building of the solar car over time. The team members also integrate into the school and interact with students in the playground and staff at the school to answer questions and support connections with the team and it’s project. We wish them luck with the race on 28th October!.
