Week 4 Term 3
Nightcliff Primary School
It’s Gurrulwa guligi (Big wind time) Season for Gulumoerrgin (Larrakia) country. The flowering of wattles tell you that stingrays are fat and plentiful. The wattle (Acacia dimidiata) that is a cue for stingrays is a small tree with broad, coarse foliage and showy, bright yellow flowers. It is a common understorey shrub in Top End open woodlands.
An exciting week this week with events planning happening with our staff for Term 4. Keep an eye out for our term 4 calendar coming out shortly. Our SRC has been meeting and gathering student's voice and will be hosting Fun Fridays as part of our attendance and engagement strategy to encourage attendance on our lowest data day.
A reminder that if your child is away or you are leaving please notify the school as children remain on our roll until enrolled elsewhere as they are required to attend school wherever they may be moving to.
The parent carer information night for Read Write Inc occurred last night. We will continue to update our website with information on this program and other programs running at the school as they roll out.
Have a great week and enjoy our many photos of events happening in our Facebook page.

School Council News
My name is Anja Behlmer, and I have been part of the school council for almost six years. I have two kids in NPS (year 5 and year 3). I joined the council when my eldest started transition. I wanted to be involved and find out more about the school, coming from a different school system in Germany.
Over the years, I have been part of several subcommittees and been the chair of the Community Engagement Committee for the last 4 years. I initiated the “Welcome Morning tea“, which has been held at the start of the school year. In Germany, where I was born, we celebrate the start of school for any new students with the whole family and significant others. I was wanting to have something similar here as I saw this as a lovely tradition to introduce others to.
Improving communication between teachers and parents has been another important focus for me on the committee. I have seen positive changes in this area over the years. The committee took on running the Mother’s and Father’s day breakfast from the teachers 2 years ago. I saw the Education Committee start up a couple of years ago, which gives an opportunity to understand more clearly the learning focus of the school.
I have worked with two principals over six years on the school council (three 2-year terms). We are lucky that we have found a principal who has been able to fill Graham’s shoes. I have found Jo very approachable when I had concerns about council issues or others. I have found that Jo listens to people‘s concerns and will try to make changes to improve things where possible.
I would like to have more family events, e.g. art fairs or quiz nights. But these events require a lot of organisation, primarily led by parents. We have not been able to organise as many as I’d hoped, as the main role of the school council is to assist the principal to govern the school.
This will be my last year officially as a council member, but I will continue as a parent on the subcommittees. This will give me a chance to organise a new event next year, as these take time and we do find ourselves short-handed. The more help there is, the more community engagement can happen.
Love to see you at one of our meetings. Please email nightcliffpsc@gmail.com if you‘d like to find out more about joining our subcommittees.
The Father’s Day breakfast will be on Friday 2nd September 2022, and we are putting out an early call for volunteers to help cook, serve and clean up at this event. Sign up using the link below and keep your eye out for a second call out closer to the day.
Road Safety Group.
“Nightcliff Primary School has a range of initiatives supporting road safety around the school and within the school catchment. We are seeking information about ‘critical incidents’ (something occurred that resulted in injury or damage) and ‘near misses’ (something occurred that did not result in an injury or damage but could have) involving students and their parents/carers on their way to or from Nightcliff Primary School. This information helps us plan solutions to road safety problems around Nightcliff Primary School.
If you have had – or have observed – a near miss or a critical incident, please report the incident to the Front Office at (08) 89488488 or email nightcliff.ps@education.nt.gov.au. We will be asking this question in the school survey this year as well to continue to collect data.
